Is The Dentist Visited By Many People?

The importance of oral health is something that most people would agree upon. We should make sure to take good care of it. Only 58% of people actually see their dentist on average each year, despite 85% of people agreeing that oral health is extremely important to their overall health. The dentist tops the list of health practitioners that Americans want to see more frequently, but they aren’t visiting their dentists as often as they should. Dentists recommend that people visit their dentist twice a year, but this depends on an individual’s oral health habits and medical conditions. Dental visits are essential to prevent cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer. Patients usually visit their dentists for routine cleanings and checkups. In the last century, the dental industry has evolved and improved, as have the different technologies used to improve the gums, teeth, and overall health of patients. Technology like these allows patients to have a healthy and beautiful smile, something we all strive for.

Cleaning with Ultrasonics

In dentistry, ultrasonic cleaning is one of the newest technologies. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, teeth cleaning is essential for the prevention of disease and decay. A dental cleaning is therefore an important part of your checkup since it allows your teeth, gums, and mouth to be thoroughly cleaned. A dental ultrasonic cleaning is used to remove dental plaque (which is a bacterial biofilm that forms naturally in the mouth) and dental calculus (tartar), which is a hard deposit that leaves stains on teeth. Plaque and tartar can contain diseases-causing bacteria that can damage your teeth and overall oral health if they’re accumulated.

The dentist will typically use a small dental instrument to physically remove deposits from your teeth using a procedure called scaling. Prior to ultrasonic scalers, dentists cleaned teeth manually. To cause the tip of the ultrasonic scaler to vibrate, electromagnetic forces are used in its hand-held “wand”. Due to these faster than sound vibrations, all plaque and calculus stains on your teeth are effectively removed. Lavage is also required during this process to remove any remaining buildup. This small stream of water emerges near the tip of the scaler.

The Expected Experience

Manual scaling takes about a third as long as ultrasonic cleaning. You will be in and out of the dentist’s office much quicker than in the past. Additionally, this method is preferred by many patients because it is kinder to the mouth and teeth as the clinician has to use less force on the scale because its vibrations and lavage do all the work. It is sometimes uncomfortable to undergo dental work because of the size and shape of the mouth, but ultrasonic cleaning helps to alleviate some of the discomfort. Most patients experience little or no discomfort at all during the process.
